York Minster has had four major fires in its history - 1753, 1829, 1840 and 1984
This medallion commemorates the fire of 1829 - started by Jonathan Martin, a well-known religious malcontent who had originally been committed to a mental asylum in 1817 after threatening to shoot the Bishop of Oxford.
After the fire in York Minster he was incarcerated in the Bethlem Hospital ( the original Bedlam) where he died in 1838.
An interesting man, and an interesting piece of history - well worth further research.
